IEC 62443 standard for cyber security

Industrial security expands digitally with cyber security processes. Protect your plants from cyber risks with products compliant with IEC 62443.

The goal of this standard is to make safe industrial communication networks and automation/control systems through a systematic approach.

The IEC 62443 standard describes the basic requirements for the prevention of risks related to the network security of your industrial plants (cyber security). Phoenix Contact helps us achieve these goals of safe operation of industrial automation systems.

What are the fundamentals of the IEC 62443 standard?

The standard defines the rules for component manufacturers, in order to ensure the safety of what they produce, for machine / plant manufacturers, with the aim of observing their interaction in a safe way, and for the operator to ensure operational procedures.

The standard also includes IT security guidelines, for more complete protection from all cyber risks.

Phoenix Contact is certified by accredited bodies for the design of secure automation solutions according to the IEC 62443 standard. To implement a secure automation solution, you need to carry out a risk and threat analysis and then it is possible to define the requirements for the system and used components.

In order to maintain a system in a safety status over time, it is necessary to proceed with constant monitoring and maintenance, careful planning of the network and management of users, rights and access data to the network itself.

“Remote-Monitoring and –Control”: a Phoenix Contact’s project

Let’s take this project as an example to explain the requirements of the 62443 standard. This solution (look at the image below), certified according to the IEC 62443-3-3 standard, allows to:

  • segment into zones and ducts
  • control the data flow
  • constant codify communications
  • stabilize components
  • define processes for patch management
  • define processes for risk management

This solution offers a complete package of Phoenix Contact products and services that guarantee cyber security within a production process.

Phoenix Contact and the cyber security

Phoenix Contact provides a wide range of products developed through the most modern security functions. Today the company is a certifier according to these standards:

  • IEC 62443-4-1 for the development of Secure-by-Design products;
  • IEC 62443-2-4 for the design of safe automation solutions;
  • IEC 62443-3-3 for remote monitoring and control.

The advantages of a secure system with Phoenix Contact concern several aspects, such as data protection, continuity of operation of production plants and a more profitable production system.
